play with me playlist, take one

this week has been very inspiring. so inspiring, in fact, that it has encouraged me to finally post my first blog. some of you have been waiting on it for too long, and i’m sorry. mostly i’m sorry because it probably won’t be worth the wait.
over the past few months i have gone through a number of ideas on exactly the kind of blog i want to post. i knew i wanted it to be about music, but i didn’t want you to read it thinking i’m trying to be an expert or authority on the subject. honestly, i want the total opposite.

there are music blogs everywhere. i wanted to build mine on the principle that we all share and learn from each other when it comes to good tunes. i hope that you will interact with me in this blog, that you will suggest playlist themes, add picks of your own, or even completely bash my playlists and call my ideas stupid (as long as your playlist kicks my playlist’s ass).

so here it is: my first “play with me playlist” post.

it’s definitely ‘hippie week’. Monday (4/20) was the perfect kick off, followed by Earth Day on Wednesday. Plus, the arts festival is in full swing down in OKC. inspiration everywhere! being named the resident ‘hippie’ at work – i’m still not sure why – i’ve compiled a list of songs that i believe really fit this week. songs about loving mother earth. songs that, ehem, may or may not prompt you to, um, partake. songs that just make you feel groovy inside.

One Love – Bob Marley and the Wailers
Bob Marley is an obvious pick for this week. this song makes me want to sway in the breeze while wearing a headband made from dandelions. yeah, it’s that good.

Cuz I Got High – Afroman
go ahead and laugh, you know this song cracks you up. and i feel it’s an honest representation of what happens when we smoke. they smoke. other people. like Afroman. uh. number three please!!!

Rise – Eddie Vedder
this is my favorite song on the soundtrack to Into The Wild, a movie that made me really want have an outdoor adventure. (until the SUPER sad ending. if you haven’t seen it, check it out. based on a true story.) it’s just a nice, subtle, change your world for the better type of song given to us by the unmistakable voice of Pearl Jam.

Snow (Hey Oh) – Red Hot Chili Peppers
for me, this song is great when there’s too much going on and you just want to chill. whether or not you need some ‘help’ to really relax, this song is a good start.

What a Wonderful World – Louis Armstrong
if you can’t see why this song is a perfect fit, go directly outside and hug a tree. i’m serious. you need to form a bond with nature immediately.

now for the Local Pick – every week i’ll do at least one “local pick.” we have AMAZING local acts and it’s important for all of you to check them out.

Thunder and Lightning – Sam and the Stylees
this week was the dfest 2009 press conference – yay! – so i picked a band that was announced as part of this year's lineup. this song is a good taste- perfect for this playlist--but you MUST experience a live Sam and the Stylees show to really catch the vibe. their next Tulsa show is May 01 at the Jenks Riverwalk Crossing & Amphitheater.

so tell me: what did you listen to this week when you:
-celebrated4/20?
-celebrated earth day?
